German carmaker BMW's mid-size luxury crossover SUV is known as the X6.
For the 2008 model year, the first generation (E71) went on sale in April 2008. BMW marketed the X6 as a sporting activity coupé (SAC). It blends the characteristics of an SUV with the stance of a coupé, including high ground clearance, all-wheel drive and all-weather capability, huge wheels and tires (styling featuring a sloping roof). The previous generation BMW 5 and 6 Series served as its foundation. After the start of E70 X5 development in 2001, Peter Tuennermann started developing E71 in 2003. Testing of prototypes and test mules began in the summer of 2005 after Pierre Leclercq's design work on the E70 X5 was put on hold.
