The 2.6-liter inline-6 engine in the Supra was the first Toyota production engine to feature electronic fuel injection in 1979. The Supra had a choice between a manual and automatic transmission and included 4-wheel disc brakes and an independent suspension as standard equipment.
The Supra underwent its next significant upgrade, with the exception of minor aesthetic adjustments, in 1993, when it became a class of vehicle known as a "supercar." The new Supra was a major departure from previous Supras and was offered in both Turbo and non-Turbo configurations. Performance was now the goal, thus numerous weight-saving techniques were used. Toyota even went so far as to give the car hollow carpet fibers and a hollow rear spoiler (an optional feature on Turbo models).
