The Stinger is descended from the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show GT Concept and the 2014 North American International Auto Show Kia GT4 Stinger. The car was unveiled at the 2017 North American International Auto Show. It was designed by Peter Schreyer and Gregory Guillaume (Kia's Chief Designer) at Kia's European studio in Frankfurt and engineered by former BMW M Vice President of Engineering Albert Biermann. Biermann is the current executive vice president of performance development and high performance vehicles for Hyundai Motor Group.
According to Guillaume, the Coca-Cola bottle partially influenced the design of the Stinger. During an interview, he made the following remark regarding the car's function: "The new Kia Stinger is a genuine grand tourer, a vehicle for long-distance driving with vigor. Not at the expense of luxury, comfort, and grace is brute power, hard-edged dynamics, and brutal styling. The Stinger has nothing to do with arriving at the destination first; this vehicle is all about the journey."
