The Nismo Z-tune is a highly sought-after and rare vehicle, with only 19 units ever produced. Originally designed as a concept in 2002, the first Z-tune was built in 2003 using a used 2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R V·Spec II. The car was equipped with a specially designed 'Z1' engine, based on Nissan's racing experiences in GT2 and GT500 events. This engine featured a strengthened block and stroked crankshaft, as well as a bored out displacement of 2.8 liters and upgraded turbochargers. It was rated at 500 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque, and had a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of over 203 mph.
In celebration of Nismo's anniversary, the company was given permission to build Z-tune models for a limited production run. They purchased 18 used R34 GT-R V·Spec cars, each with less than 18,000 miles on the odometer, and completely stripped and rebuilt them from the ground up. The cars were given a special "Z-tune Silver" color, with one left in its original Midnight Purple III color. The 2.8 liter engine was revised to reach a speed of 8,000 rpm, and the turbochargers were supplied by IHI. The Z2 engine was advertised to generate 500 horsepower, though it was actually capable of producing more.
The bodywork of the Z-tune was designed with functional components used in Nismo's GT500 racing cars, such as engine bay vents and wider arches for wider wheels. The car also featured an aggressive suspension setup from Sachs and a specially designed Brembo brake system. Every aspect of the Z-tune was handmade, with the chassis being reinforced and stiffened through seam welding and carbon fiber being added to the strut towers, transmission tunnel, and engine bay. The suspension, drivetrain, engine, and gearbox were all redesigned for maximum efficiency and reliability. Despite originally planning to build 20 units, Nismo only produced 19, including two prototypes. The Nismo Z-tune is a truly unique and rare vehicle that is highly prized by collectors and car enthusiasts.
